Background and composition [edit]
Expressionless or Alive'due south vocaliser Pete Burns stated in his autobiography that he composed "You Spin Me Round" by using 2 existing songs as inspiration for creating something new:
How did I write "Spin Me"? I listened to Luther Vandross'southward 'I Wanted Your Love'. Information technology's not the same chord structure, but so that's the way I make music – I hear something and I sing some other melody over it. I didn't sit and study the Luther Vandross album – I heard the song and it locked. [...] I'yard trying to structure the music and I know what I want. [...] It'due south similar exercise this, do this, practise this - and suddenly it hits. I don't want to do Luther Vandross's song, just I can still sing the same blueprint over it. And there was another tape, by Little Nell, called "Meet Y'all 'Round Like A Tape". [...] So I had those two, Van Dross [sic] and Petty Nell and – bingo! – done deal.
—Pete Burns, Freak Unique (2007)
Desiring to motility on from the sound of the band's first album, Sophisticated Boom Boom, Pete Burns wanted "You lot Spin Me Circular" to be produced by the then little-known production squad Stock Aitken Waterman, in the Hi-NRG way of their 1984 United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland hits "You Recall You're a Man" past Divine, and "Whatever I Practice (Wherever I Go)" by Hazell Dean.[6]
Burns claimed the song was "completed" by the time the producers were then chosen to work on information technology, stating that "the record companies don't trust a band to become into the studio without a producer".[8] Co-ordinate to Burns, the tape company was unenthusiastic well-nigh "You Spin Me Round" to such an extent that Burns had to accept out a £2,500 loan to tape it. Subsequently it was recorded, he recalled, "the record company said it was awful" and the band had to fund production of the song's video themselves.[9]
Interviewed for BBC Radio 4'due south The Reunion: The Hit Factory, in Apr 2015, Burns said that a confrontational mental attitude betwixt the producers and band led to "quite a bad vibe" during production and "a time of intense friction".[10] Engineer Phil Harding, who mixed the rails, said tensions were running and then high between the band members and producers Mike Stock and Matt Aitken during mixing, that it virtually escalated to violence.[vi] Stock has disputed the seriousness of studio tensions, alleging that Burns, Harding and Pete Waterman accept all "exaggerated" what happened in their recounting of events.[eleven]
